The end of summer is getting close, and I can look back on the past six and a half weeks of camp with a million things to say. As a first-time senior counselor at Summer Sports School, I have learned a LOT. At first I felt a little swamped; it seemed like there were so many kids and so much to organize. Even thinking about it makes me a little nauseous. I was a bit unsure of myself the first week, but soon realized that the best way to learn here is to just trust yourself and do what you think is best, and if that doesn’t work, try something new. I am going into my second year of middle years education here at the U of R, and lesson planning, supervising groups of kids and encouraging them to play sports is definitely preparing me for my future career. It has been such a great experience as a whole, good times and bad. There have been many challenges along the way, such as engaging kids who don’t always want to play the sports planned and finding new ways to get them involved while the original group needs a referee for the game. In the mean time, one kid needs to go to the bathroom, one tripped and fell and the other is running out the door. It’s times like these that might make you wonder how one can actually enjoy this job. But all the good times really make up for the not-so-good–and more. It is really rewarding to see kids participating in sports and having fun. This definitely makes it fun for us as counselors as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed my summer working here with a great group of kids and a great staff, who, even though I am new, didn’t make me feel for a second like the “new guy”. THANK YOU!
